Bank like you believe it: A Christian case for ethical banking

Have you ever thought about what your bank does with your money?

As Christians, we want every aspect of our lives to honour God, including our finances. But often, we don’t stop to think about how the simple act of choosing a bank can reflect our beliefs.

Here are five reasons why ethical banking is something every Christian should consider.

1. Social responsibility

In His teaching, Jesus emphasised the need to put others before ourselves, particularly looking out for the vulnerable and marginalised. Ethical banks often reflect this principle by promoting fair lending practices, financial inclusion, and avoiding harmful or exploitative investments.

Some also support local community development through sustainable lending. Choosing a bank that cares for people is one way to put your money where your heart is.

2. Standing against greed and corruption

We live in a world that can value profit over people, but the Bible calls us to something different. Jesus encourages His people to store up treasures in heaven rather than chasing earthly wealth (Matt 6:19-20).

Ethical banks aim to be transparent, accountable, and fair. By choosing one, we take a stand for integrity and reject systems that can exploit others for financial gain.

3. Caring for God’s creation

God gave humanity the world to work and look after. From creation, we have had a responsibility to care for it. This means we should think carefully about how our money might contribute to environmental harm.

Ethical banks typically invest in renewable energies and eco initiatives, while avoiding investments that are harmful to the planet. It’s a way to live out our calling as stewards of creation. At Kingdom Bank we recognise the responsibility we have, so are committed to regularly monitoring and minimising the negative environmental effects of our activities, and we are working towards becoming operationally carbon neutral. We also encourage all our property and mortgage customers to consider the environmental impact of their plans and decisions.

4. Principles of stewardship

Stewardship is about more than giving; it’s about using all our resources in a way that glorifies God. If we recognise that all we have is a gift from God, then this should include where we save our money. Ethical banking helps to ensure that our finances are managed in a way that serves others, has a positive impact, and aligns with Biblical values. With Kingdom Bank, you will always know your savings are being used to help us provide mortgages for churches and Christian ministries. See for yourself and watch Xander and Melody’s story.

5. Avoiding investments that contradict our faith

When you save with a bank, your money doesn’t just sit there; it gets invested. Ethical banks avoid investing in harmful industries, like weapons manufacturing, exploitative labour, and negative environmental practices. Ethical banks are clear about their investment policies, meaning instead of guessing how your money is being used, Christians can be confident that it’s doing good.

Beyond ethical banking

At Kingdom Bank, we don’t just offer ethical savings options – we provide a way for customers to give their savings a gospel mission. When you save with us, your money is being used to provide mortgages for churches, Christian charities, and gospel workers across the UK. It is protected under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) and when you need it back you get it back, with interest. That means your savings aren’t just safe – they’re serving the Kingdom.
