The Understanding UK Evangelicals report brings together new research into the UK’s Evangelical population and examines its beliefs, identity, and demographics.

The report estimates that 5.5 million people in the UK are ‘Broad Evangelicals’ – people who both identify as Evangelical and hold evangelical beliefs. It also estimates there are 2.6 million ‘Classic Evangelicals’. That is, people who identify as Evangelical and hold all four of its core evangelical beliefs: the authority of the Bible, personal conversion, the centrality of the cross, and putting faith into action.

The report describes this as ‘significant growth’ from the 2 million Evangelicals estimated in Tearfund’s 2007 survey of UK churchgoers.

Paul Houghton, Chief Executive Officer at Kingdom Bank, said:

“Research such as this provides an opportunity to reflect on the scale of the contribution Evangelical Christians are making across the UK.  Our own experience over the past few years is of significantly increasing demand from Evangelical churches for mortgages to acquire, develop, and improve the buildings and facilities they need to accommodate growing ministries.”

In 2020, the Bank lent around £5 million to churches, charities, and Christian ministries. By 2025, that had increased to more than £28 million. Mortgage lending is expected to grow to over £30 million in 2026.

Pod Bhogal, Chief Market Officer at Kingdom Bank, said:

“We see that many churches are beginning to outgrow their spaces and need to rework their existing buildings or buy new ones. What most people don’t realise is the direct connection between our ability to provide mortgages and the need for Christians to save with us. Deposits with Kingdom Bank help provide the liquidity we need to lend to churches, charities, and ministry workers. If you want your savings to support the work of growing Christian churches, you can help make more lending possible by choosing Kingdom Bank for your savings.”

As Evangelical churches continue to grow and serve their local communities across the UK, Kingdom Bank will continue to provide the financial support they need to develop and expand their ministries.

Why should my church save with Kingdom Bank?

One of the main questions we get as a bank is “why?” Why go to the effort of changing bank? Why choose a slightly lower interest rate than I can get elsewhere? Why does my banking need to be explicitly ‘Christian’?
