The impact of increasing housing costs on gospel ministry

Ministries are feeling the pinch of increased housing costs. As Christians, how can we be planning, praying, and preparing for this?

In 2025, the Office for National Statistics reported that private rents increased by 5.5%, and the average UK house price increased by 3.0%. In 2024, around a third of adults expressed they were finding it ‘very or somewhat difficult to afford their rent or mortgage payments.’ Christian ministries are also feeling the impact. But why does this matter, and how should Christians respond?

Giving is harder

With rent and mortgage costs rising, energy prices soaring and council tax increasing, lots of us feel the pinch. One of the first things often hit by this reality is charitable giving, as people have less money to spare and give away. For ministries who rely on regular donations, this can have a knock-on impact, which should be a real challenge for us as Christians.

For those of us who are worried about finances, how can we still be prioritising generosity and giving, even when we feel the pinch of the cost of living? And for those less impacted by this, are there ways in which we can be giving more to help ministries thrive, even in a struggling economy?

Community-based ministry

As it becomes harder to find affordable housing, many ministry workers face challenges when wanting to buy property in their community. For those in vocational ministry, living and working in the area they serve is often of great importance, as it allows them to build deeper relationships, get alongside neighbours, and regularly meet with their community. This is key in helping churches serve their local area. As it becomes harder to buy, ministry workers may have to live elsewhere, making it harder to reach local people with the gospel.

At Kingdom Bank, we are passionate about providing churches and ministry workers with affordable mortgages, which help them to live and serve in their community. This is all enabled by Christians choosing to save with us, knowing that their money is put to work to support growing gospel ministries.

Evangelistic impact

Increased housing costs don’t just impact those working in ministry, but also everyday Christians who want to be intentional about getting to know neighbours. People may need to move around more to find affordable rent, or even move out of the area, which has a direct impact on these natural opportunities for relational evangelism. What a tragedy it would be if there are areas in our country where people don’t hear the gospel because house prices are too expensive. Let’s be praying that communities across the UK would be filled with Christians who are faithfully sharing the gospel with those around them.

Increased pressure on Christian services

Rising housing costs are reflective of the trend we see across our society, as almost everything is becoming more expensive. For many churches and Christian ministries, this leads to increased pressure, as more people are reaching out for help and support. As previously mentioned, some will be impacted by decreased giving, but there’s often also an additional need for the services they provide.

At Kingdom Bank we have the privilege of partnering with many different ministries which have become a lifeline or community hub, as people search for hope and help. Across the country, many ministries running foodbanks, providing debt advice, hosting community groups, or being a ‘warm space’ are seeing more people come through their doors, which increases running costs. Let’s be upholding these ministries in prayer. Pray for the opportunities they have to practically demonstrate love, for more people to get involved and serve, and for those people who come along, that, ultimately, they would hear and respond to the gospel.

So yes, rising housing prices does impact gospel ministry. But there’s hope! We have a God who works in ways we can’t imagine. So, let’s pray to Him, give generously, and partner with Kingdom ministries to have a big impact for the gospel.
